Here are some key takeaways from the most recent April inflation report as issued by Dominion Lending Centres chief economist, Sherry Cooper.
In April, Canadian inflation eased to 2.7% from 2.9% in March. This was the fourth consecutive drop, mainly due to slower price increases for food, services, and durable goods. However, gasoline prices rose faster, moderating the overall decline. Without gasoline, inflation slowed to 2.5%.
Food prices rose more slowly, with store-bought food up 1.4% and restaurant prices up 4.3%. Shelter costs, including rent and mortgage interest, continued to drive inflation.
With inflation pressures easing, there’s a growing chance the Bank of Canada might cut interest rates in June. This could help buyers and sellers in Windsor-Essex by lowering borrowing costs. However, the central bank remains cautious and might wait until July for further action, depending on future inflation trends.
Key Points:
- Inflation Trends: April saw a slight decrease in inflation, with significant contributions from slower rises in food and service prices.
- Gasoline Impact: Gas prices rose, affecting overall inflation figures.
- Shelter Costs: Rising costs for rent and mortgages continued to influence inflation.
- Future Rate Cuts: The easing inflation increases the likelihood of a rate cut in June, which could benefit the real estate market in Windsor-Essex.
